Old buildings are not defective modern buildings
Solid walls work in a completely different way to modern cavity walls. They are living, breathing things that allow for movement and manage damp by letting moisture pass through and evaporate. Seal them with cement, gypsum or plastic paint and the water has nowhere to go but inwards.
- Breathability
- A blanket term for permeability, capillarity and hygroscopicity — a wall wetting and drying without harm.
- Lime vs cement
- Cement-based mortar is a death sentence for soft bricks: it allows no movement and traps moisture. Spalling follows when the mortar is harder than the brick.
- Compatible repair
- Like for like — lime putty or hot-lime mortar, hemp or perlite plaster, matched bricks and stone.
- Sensitive cleaning
- DOFF superheated steam and Thermatech rather than sandblasting, tested on a panel first.
